Lawn Fertilization That Actually Fits Parrish

What Goes Down, and When

• Late winter (February–March). Pre-emergent goes down before spring weed germination, paired with the first slow-release nitrogen application to kick the lawn out of dormancy.
• Spring (April–May). Full-rate slow-release nitrogen with micronutrients. This is when St. Augustine, Bahia, and Zoysia put on most of their annual growth, so feeding them now sets up the whole year.
• Early summer (pre-blackout, typically through May). Last nitrogen application before the rainy-season restriction kicks in. Often paired with soil conditioning to carry roots through the blackout.
• Summer blackout (roughly June–September). No NPK fertilizer. Iron and micronutrient applications hold color. Targeted insecticide and herbicide continues if chinch bug, sod webworm, or summer weed pressure appears.
• Fall (October). Nitrogen resumes on day one of the allowed window. Recovery from any summer thinning, prep for winter.
• Late fall (November–December). Final application focuses on root strength heading into cooler months. Iron or potassium depending on the grass.

Different Grasses, Different Programs

St. Augustine (most common in Parrish): moderate nitrogen needs, high iron demand, chinch-bug target. Program weights toward spring + fall nitrogen and summer iron/micronutrient to hold color.

Bahia (common inland, east Parrish): lower nitrogen needs, tolerates low fertility, struggles with mole crickets. Program is lighter and simpler — over-fertilizing Bahia just thickens the thatch.
